“How can we get trainers to talk to each other, learn from each other and support each other? Everyone wants to hold onto their secrets.”
This was a recent question I was asked by a follower and I thought, what a great topic – let’s talk about it.
Why does it seem that so many trainers don’t want to help because they want to guard their secrets?
From what I’ve observed, a lot (not all) trainers have a scarcity mindset.
This means that they feel that resources are scarce, competition is high, competitors and even non competitors are a threat and so on.
Basically, that there isn’t enough to go around and that other trainers are out to use and abuse them.
Sort of like a dog guarding a resource – it all comes from fear.
Is the fear justified?
Unfortunately there are people in any industry who will take advantage of others, so we don’t exactly want to throw caution to the wind.
But we don’t need to feel afraid to help others out either.
When you help someone to become a better trainer, they can help more dogs and dog owners – and we can all reach that common goal together.
On the flip side, if you’re a trainer looking for help, maybe searching for a mentor, remember that the person’s time is valuable and anyone else would have to pay for their training knowledge.
While many trainers help each other for free, we want to make sure the relationship is mutually beneficial and not a one way street.
Just as you would expect to pay for a training seminar, you might like to offer to pay your mentor for their most valuable asset, their time. They may decline your offer to pay but don’t just expect free services.
If we expect people to pay us for help, we should also be willing to pay for help in areas of training improvement, personal development and business growth.
In fact, investing in ourselves helps us to grow and improve.
If you have a training business or plan to start one, be upfront about your goals with those you seek to mentor you in training.
And in the future when someone approaches you for help, don’t forget to pay it forward and share the love 😉
What about the information and methods shared – paid or not? Should we hold back and keep some secrets for ourselves?
I was speaking to one of my Masterclass students recently and she was saying how she helped a client with some life saving dog skills, and then added, “It was another trainer’s material, but super valuable…”
I replied, “well none of us come out of the vagina just knowing this stuff!”
No matter what twist or branding we come up with, nothing is fully original. We learn bits and pieces from many other people throughout our careers – all through networking, seminars, books, videos and sharing.
Just like with dog training, trust is an important part of the relationship. Networking and helping others can lead to amazing friendships and opportunities.
Get involved both online and offline in meeting new people and expanding your horizons.
I have made life long friends this way and have also seen it happen to members of the Masterclass as they support each other in the group.
Maybe one day you’ll be there too!

A common belief when it comes to running a successful dog training business is that most of your work will need to be done nights and weekends. It was something I wasn’t really keen on when I started out, but everyone told me that’s just the way it is when you’re a dog trainer.
So at first, I did it. And then I realised – this is MY business and I can design it and run it however I want it to look!
Thankfully, I was willing to challenge the, “normal,” way and test out if I really needed to be stuck working lots of after hours and weekends forever.
And shortly after that, working three week days per week seeing clients, I had my first 6 figure year.
So that’s the topic of today’s highlighted blog post – do dog trainers really HAVE to work after hours and weekends?
Read it here and don’t forget to share your experience in the comments below.

Have you ever looked at some successful dog trainer and thought, “well, that works for them there, but my area is different?”
I hear this all the time. Not just from trainers either.
If you think your town, or even hour whole country, is one of these areas where people just think differently about paying a dog trainer, you’ll want to read this.
It’s such an important one, I wrote a whole blog post about it.
If you’re in a small town or an area where all the competitors are cheap as chips, or if you feel you just can’t charge more because people won’t pay more in your area, you’ll want to read this post.
Unless you’re literally on another planet with creatures other than humans as your main target audience, everything I teach can work for you right where you are.
I have had students in several countries from around the globe – some insist it’s different for them in their country and in the same country another trainer has raging success using the same system. The first step the second trainer made towards their success is believing it is possible for them. The first trainer stayed still in a fixed mindset.

“Is it Friday yet?” do you still yearn for Fridays – or maybe you choose to work weekends and yearn for Sunday?
I still love Fridays, maybe from years of conditioning… but it’s not the same as before. I used to love Fridays because it meant I was about to get a two day break from my full time job that I really hated. And then I DREADED Monday.
Now? I look forward to both Fridays and Mondays! Because I design my business to be as enjoyable as possible no matter what day it is.
It didn’t happen overnight, but I took the steps to change things and make my life my choice.
If there’s a certain day of the week you’re still dreading, what could you do to change things?
Perhaps raise your rates so that you could quit your, “other job,” and have more time off?
Or maybe say no to working weekends?
If the thought of charging more money scares you and you just don’t think people in your area will pay more for dog training, I just wrote a post for you.
“When People Won’t Pay What Your Dog Training Service Is Worth” <— click to read now.
Because when people just won’t pay what you wish you could charge, the question to ask is, “or will they?”

Today I am highlighting a replay of a Facebook live i did about mindset, motivation, money, success, failures – lots!
The video is a little delayed sorry, but the audio is fine and I’d love for you to check it out.
Here’s the link to view. I will read all your comments!
Now I don’t know exactly how long you’ve been following me but you may have noticed that topics around mindset come up quite a bit around here.
Why do I harp on about it? Shouldn’t we focus on growing your business?
Absolutely.
And mindset is the key to doing that.
See you can have all the business plans, facebook ads, shiny websites and video plans in the world (and I can help you with all of these) but if your mindset is poor? You will continually struggle.
Working on yourself is the best thing you can do in your business and the numbers reflect in your bank account as well.
Working on my mindset continually has helped me build resilience against all manner of obstacles.
Successful people don’t have a lack of troubles – but every time a challenge comes up in life, they get back up and focus on solutions (even if you have a cry on the floor first, that is ok – it’s getting back up that counts).
I hope it gives you some inspiration, and maybe even some motivation 😉
